A typical 20ft container carries about 430 m² of 20mm marble slabs or 275–280 m² of 30mm marble slabs.
For slabs around 2800 × 1800 mm:
Marble containers are planned by weight, not by cubic space. At Excellent Stone we normally plan a 20ft marble container at around 25 tonnes of cargo, not the container's theoretical maximum payload, because the container still has to move legally by road after it leaves the factory.
Square meters per container is a more reliable planning figure than a fixed slab count.

For full-size marble slabs, a 20ft container is normally planned by weight first, not by how much empty cubic space remains inside the container.
Based on our normal export planning, the following figures are useful starting references:

Each 2800 × 1800 mm slab covers approximately 5.04 m².
So:
430 ÷ 5.04 ≈ 85 slabs
and:
280 ÷ 5.04 ≈ 55 slabs
This is only a planning conversion. Natural marble slabs do not have one standardized length and width.
In our actual order follow-up, we do not start with a rule such as "one container equals 85 slabs." We first review the current slab dimensions, thickness and total square meters, then estimate the cargo weight and loading arrangement.
A shipment of smaller slabs may contain 90–100 pieces while still carrying roughly the same total square meters. Larger slabs may reduce the piece count to around 80 without meaning that the container is underloaded.
That is why buyers should compare m², slab dimensions and weight together, rather than comparing suppliers only by slabs per container.
It also helps to read this in project terms. Container figures always refer to slab area, not installed area. Cutting to size normally loses 10–15% — partly offcuts, partly because vein-matched slabs cannot be cut freely. So about 430 m² of 20mm slabs covers roughly 365–385 m² of finished floor or wall cladding: a mid-size hotel lobby with feature walls, or the flooring of about four 90 m² apartments.
The theoretical payload printed for a 20ft container and the practical marble loading weight are not the same thing.
A standard 20ft container may allow approximately 28.2 tonnes of maximum payload, depending on the actual equipment. In our export operations, however, we normally estimate the loaded cargo at around 25 tonnes for standard planning.
We deliberately leave this margin.
Our follow-up team has found that the container still has to pass several weight constraints after it leaves the factory. Trucking companies serving ports may recommend keeping the cargo below approximately 26 tonnes to reduce the risk of road overweight issues. The allowable inland weight can also change by destination country, vehicle configuration and route.
There is also a material reason for leaving a margin.
Marble density is not identical for every material. If a loading calculation assumes an average density but the actual stone is slightly heavier, planning directly against the container's technical maximum leaves very little room for error.
For this reason, we use approximately 25 tonnes as a working planning value, then check the actual selected slabs and shipment conditions before loading.
For some U.S.-bound orders, the allowable cargo can be significantly lower. In our experience, some shipments are planned at around 20 tonnes of cargo because of the inland trucking conditions provided for that route.
The cost of ignoring this margin falls after the container leaves the factory. An overweight container can be refused by the trucking company, have to be opened and partly reloaded, or face fines and storage charges at the destination. Which side carries those costs depends on the agreed trade terms.
Therefore:
maximum container payload should not be treated as the target marble loading weight.
The number of marble slabs in a container changes because several variables affect the final weight.
Natural marble slabs vary from block to block.
If approximately 430 m² of 20mm marble is being planned, the slab count can look very different:

This is one of the main reasons different suppliers publish different answers to "how many marble slabs fit in a container."
The difference does not necessarily mean one supplier is wrong. They may simply be using different slab dimensions.
It does mean that slab count alone is not a comparable quotation basis. A lower price per slab can simply reflect smaller or thinner slabs. Compare offers on landed cost per square meter, with slab dimensions and thickness stated.
Thickness directly changes the amount of stone in every square meter.
Using approximately 2,700 kg/m³ as a practical marble density reference:
The 30mm material therefore reaches the same practical cargo-weight limit with substantially fewer square meters.
The 2,700 kg/m³ figure is useful for estimation, but we do not assume that every marble weighs exactly the same.
Some materials are denser than others. This is another reason our loading plan includes a safety margin instead of using the theoretical maximum payload as the target.
Bundles, timber, spacers, supports and securing materials also contribute to the shipment weight and affect the final loading arrangement.
The final container quantity therefore needs to be confirmed from the actual material being shipped.
A container that can technically carry a certain weight still needs to move legally by road.
Country, state or regional road rules, tractor and chassis configuration, axle loading and the final delivery route can all affect how much cargo should actually be loaded.
This is why we confirm destination requirements before treating a container-capacity estimate as a final loading plan.
For a 20ft container, 20mm and 30mm marble should not be compared only by slab count.
A 30mm slab contains 50% more stone by volume than a 20mm slab with the same length and width.
Using approximately 2,700 kg/m³, which works out to about 54 kg/m² at 20mm and about 81 kg/m² at 30mm:
430 m² × 54 kg/m² ≈ 23.2 tonnes
while:
280 m² × 81 kg/m² ≈ 22.7 tonnes
Both fit our normal 25-tonne planning model: the stone itself is approximately 22–23 tonnes, leaving working room for packing, actual density variation and final loading adjustment.
The useful buyer takeaway is therefore:
20mm marble gives you more square meters and more slabs per container; 30mm marble gives you fewer square meters within a similar practical cargo-weight range.
Bundle count follows thickness, because the container fills up by weight. As a planning reference, a 20ft container of 20mm slabs commonly carries around 12–14 bundles, while 30mm slabs are closer to 7–9 bundles.
This is not a fixed rule. In actual loading, we determine the bundle arrangement after the slabs have been selected because bundle size depends on:
This means a buyer should not treat a bundle count as a fixed number of marble slabs. A container of large 30mm slabs holds far fewer pieces than a container of smaller 20mm slabs, and the two do not use the same number of bundles either.
For our shipment planning, the more useful figures are:
slab quantity + total m² + estimated weight + bundle arrangement.
Bundle weight also decides what happens at the destination. On one U.S. shipment the delivery port was small and had no mechanical handling available, so the container had to be unloaded by hand. Bundles of that weight moved slowly, unloading ran past the free time allowed and storage charges were incurred. If the receiving port or site has limited handling equipment, tell us before loading — we can plan smaller bundles so the container can be unloaded with what is actually available.
A 40ft container has roughly twice the internal volume of a 20ft container, but it does not mean that it can carry twice as many marble slabs.
Marble is high-density cargo, so the limiting factor is normally weight rather than cubic volume.
Therefore, this calculation should not be used:
20ft = 85 slabs → 40ft = 170 slabs
The 40ft container provides much more internal space, but its allowable payload does not double with the volume.
In our normal slab-export planning, this is why the 20ft container is usually the more practical reference for full loads of natural marble slabs.
A 40ft container can still be used for suitable mixed cargo, slab sizes or other loading arrangements, but the final quantity must be checked from the allowable weight and actual packing plan rather than simply doubling the 20ft figure.
Once the approximate square meters per container are known, buyers can make a simple early-stage estimate.
For example, a project requiring 1,000 m² of 20mm marble:
1,000 ÷ 430 ≈ 2.33
So the initial purchasing plan would be approximately 3 × 20ft containers.
For 1,000 m² of 30mm marble:
1,000 ÷ 280 ≈ 3.57
The initial estimate would therefore be approximately 4 × 20ft containers.
We use calculations like these for early order planning, but we do not treat them as the final shipping quantity.
Once the actual slabs are selected, our team checks the slab sizes, square meters and estimated loading weight again before the shipment is finalized.
Container quantity is also a cash-flow question. Goods value, ocean freight, destination charges and duty are all incurred per container, so container count sets how much capital is committed at once. Note that 30mm gives fewer square meters per container, not necessarily a lower cost per container.
