How to identify artificial marble and engineered quartz surface?

  • March 06, 2023

What is engineered stone? Engineered stone is a mineral-filled polymer composite material that is vacuum-cast or molded from natural ore powder, high-performance resins and natural pigments. It can be divided into artificial calcium powder board, aluminum powder board, acrylic, composite acrylic, artificial marble and quartz stone, among which the hardness and appearance of artificial marble and quartz stone are comparable to natural stone. Today we mainly talk about the difference between artificial marble and quartz stone!

Artificial marble is also called synthetic stone, reconstituted stone, engineering stone. It uses natural marble chips and stone powder as the main raw materials, and can also add mosaics, shells, glass and other materials as embellishments. It uses organic resin as a binder, and is made into square materials by vacuum stirring and high-pressure vibration, and then cured at room temperature (cured) The time is more than 7 days), sawing, grinding, polishing and other processes to make slabs.Xiamen Excellent Stone can fabricate full-body artificial marble slab, pls check an example as below,it is Calcutta Artificial Marble with grey vein and gold vein. The full body slab can be an alternative for calacatta quartz surface.

Quartz stone is synthesized from more than 90% quartz sand and 10% resin. It is named quartz stone because the raw material contains up to 93% quartz sand. Both are made into slabs through vacuum, high pressure, kiln heating and curing, sawing, grinding, polishing and other processes.

Artificial marble is less hard than quartz stone and has insufficient wear resistance. But the texture is more delicate, the price is cheaper, and some complex shapes can be made.

How to identify the artificial marble and quartz surface?

Some people say to scratch the board with a knife, some say to use acid soak... These are all right, but is there an easy way for people who don't understand stone and chemistry to easily identify the authenticity?

Yes! Just look at the back!

The back of the real quartz stone is polished by a turntable, and there are arc scratches, which are obvious.

The back of the artificial marble is relatively flat. It is cross-cut, it is a light straight mark, or there is no scratch.

Therefore, if you look at the curved scratches on the back, it is a real quartz stone, and if there are straight marks or no scratches on the back, it is a artificial marble.
