Quick Answer
A bookmatch check is two checks, and running them as one is how buyers reject sound pairs and approve broken ones.
Five things about a pair have exactly one correct answer and can be verified from records. The seam itself cannot: it is judged against a stated tolerance. The sections below take them in that order, and then take the case where the records check out and the pair still does not read.

You will be told that slight misalignment in the fine veining is natural. It is. What that answer leaves open is where natural stops being an explanation and starts being a reason to send the pair back.
A bookmatch is judged on what the major veins do at the seam, not on how exactly one face copies the other.
The two faces were next to each other inside the block, not identical. Veining keeps changing through the thickness of the stone, and the saw removes several millimetres of it on the way through, which is why the finest veining is affected most. The Natural Stone Institute puts the limit plainly: adjacent slabs produce a near mirror, not a mathematical duplicate. So “perfect mirror”, “flawless match” and “exact symmetry” cannot be specified. Zero misalignment is the one figure a bookmatch specification must never contain, because the vein wanders inside the block and no saw can be asked to correct that.
What goes in the order instead is a maximum. Two parts of a bookmatch are judged by eye — whether the major veins meet and carry across the joint, and whether the pair reads as symmetrical at the distance the wall will be seen from. Everything else is a number, starting with the offset at the seam itself:

Four more tolerances feed into that figure, which is why an argument about veining is often really an argument about one of these:

Same block is not the same as bookmatched. Veining changes from one end of a block to the other, so two slabs cut six apart share a block number and have no mirror relationship at all.
Before judging how a pair looks, check the five things that have a correct answer.

Consecutive slab numbers are necessary, but they do not by themselves prove the slabs were processed for bookmatching.
When two neighbouring slabs come off a block, the two faces that were originally facing each other carry the closest mirror relationship, and those are the faces that have to be finished. Normal practice on any slab is to finish whichever face looks better. If every slab in the sequence has simply been polished on the same side, what you have is sequentially polished material rather than a bookmatch: both slabs are genuine, both came off the block in order, and the pair still cannot be used as a bookmatched pair.
So the finished face belongs in the check, and it belongs before layout and cutting. Confirm the slab numbers, then put the pair in its intended orientation and verify that the finished faces produce the mirror. A sequential slab can be re-finished on its reverse face, but that is a fabrication decision to take deliberately, not something the numbers entitle you to assume.
If the reverse face has to be done, thickness decides whether it can be done at all. About a millimetre of stone comes off in total: 0.2–0.5 mm went with the first polish, and a full grinding sequence on the reverse takes another 0.3–0.6 mm. The floor is around 16 mm, because thinner than that slabs start breaking in handling, crating and the crossing.
A 20 mm or 25 mm slab has room for it and still has two or three millimetres in hand. An 18 mm slab does not: after both passes it sits barely above the floor, so re-finishing the reverse face on one carries a real risk of breaking it. Ask what the slab measures now rather than what it is nominally.
Where the pair is delivered as one jointed panel rather than two panels joined at the wall, the order of the remaining work is fixed, and that is the part which cannot be re-run. The pair is matched and the seam line marked, the two are clamped and the gap cleaned out, the seam and any holes or cracks are filled with adhesive tinted to the base colour and the veining, and only then is the pair ground and polished as one surface: a joint cannot be ground flush before the joint exists.
We work to a full cure of 24 to 48 hours and a seam flush within 0.2 mm, tighter than the 0.3–0.5 mm the seam is accepted at, because two slabs polished separately and joined afterwards carry a colour difference and a gloss difference at the seam that no later polishing takes out. What that costs is flexibility: it has to be decided before anything is polished, the cure sits inside the production schedule, and once jointed the pair is one panel rather than two slabs.
Veining is what a bookmatched pair gets inspected for, and two correctly sequenced slabs with their veins meeting at the seam can still fail on colour.
Adjacent slabs can differ in background hue, in how saturated the veining is, and in mineral distribution, and finish adds a fourth: some marbles read lighter or darker with the viewing angle and the light, because of crystal orientation and surface reflection, which is not a polishing fault. All four are properties of the pair rather than of either slab, so they have to be looked at with both together, under one light. A difference spread across the whole face is the material and the light; one that sits exactly on the seam is a finishing question, and section 5 places it.
If the five facts check out and the pair still does not read, the problem moved downstream. The chain runs: consecutive slabs, then orientation and layout, then seam planning, then cutting. Each step can undo the one before it, which is why a bad bookmatch is a symptom rather than a finding.

The fourth row deserves a rule, because it is the one caused by a reasonable-sounding instruction. The two seam edges have to be trimmed on corresponding lines in the pattern. If the panel has to be narrowed to fit the wall, take it off the outer edges: 20 mm off one seam edge moves the mirror axis 20 mm, and the veins stop meeting.
A remote approval is worth whatever the photographs can prove about which slabs you approved and how they were arranged.

We stand a bookmatched pair up and photograph it before it ships, and the limit of that evidence is worth stating: one warehouse lighting condition is not the lighting the wall will have, and the photograph proves the pair on the day it was taken rather than what comes out of the crate.
Which is why the numbers have to keep running after approval, through fabrication, layout and packing. A numbering system that stops when QC finishes leaves an approval that cannot be matched to anything at the far end.
If a bookmatched wall is what you are pricing, the first thing to send is the elevation: height, width, and which areas have to read continuously.
That answers how many consecutive slabs the wall needs, whether current blocks can give a clean run that long, and whether the pair is being delivered as one jointed panel or as two panels joined at the wall. The last one changes the finishing sequence, and changes what you should be looking at in the photographs.
